Hong Kong activist JOSHUA WONG sentenced to 10 more years in prison

Thursday, November 5, 2026 - Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison after being convicted of conspiring to collude with foreign forces under the national security law imposed by Beijing.

The High Court delivered the sentence on Thursday, November 5, 2026, extending the 30-year-old activist's imprisonment until late 2036. Wong had already spent nearly six years behind bars and was previously expected to be released in January 2027.

His latest sentence follows a guilty plea entered in September, bringing renewed international attention to Hong Kong's treatment of pro-democracy campaigners.

Prosecutors accused Wong of working with fellow activist Nathan Law and other individuals to encourage foreign governments to impose sanctions and restrictions against Hong Kong and China.

The case focused on international lobbying activities, including efforts to secure support from American and European politicians. Judge William Tam considered the offence particularly serious, setting a 13-year starting sentence before reducing it to 10 years because of Wong's guilty plea.

Hong Kong authorities defended the ruling as necessary to protect national security, while Human Rights Watch described the sentence as cruel and unjust, arguing that peaceful advocacy and international lobbying should not attract such punishment.

The sentencing has intensified international debate over civil liberties, judicial independence and the future of democratic expression in Hong Kong. The United States has condemned the decision, while human rights organisations are calling for Wong's release and increased international pressure on Hong Kong authorities.

The case also raises concerns among international businesses and investors about the legal and political environment in the Asian financial centre.

As reactions continue, Wong's prolonged imprisonment is likely to remain a major issue in discussions about China's national security policies, international relations and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
